Timesheet Portal provides the flexibility for users to record time in both hh:mm format (e.g. 02:30) or in decimal format (02.30). With hh:mm, the hours are entered, followed by a semicolon and then the number of minutes. Decimal format is structured with the hours, followed by a semicolon and then the minutes, expressed as hundreths of an hour.
We provide the flexibility to use both formats because everyone has different requirement, and people usually tend to think of number of minutes in an hour rather than hundreths of an hour. For example when entering a start/end rate it would not make sense to expect users to state they started working at 09.75 and finished at 16.83, instead they would enter a starting time of 09:45 and finish time of 16:50.
When it comes to reporting on time, Timesheet Portal defaults to using decimal format. This is because when we are reporting on time, we usually have strong associations with the payout and chargeout rates, therefore in order for us to easily correlate the time to a rate, its easiest to work with time in decimal format. So we can instantly see that 03.45 hours charged out at £100 per hour has a total charge £345. If a person is looking through the numbers, it would not be easy to work out quickly the total charge for 3 hours and 27 minutes (which is 03.45 in decimal).
So when looking at your numbers in the system, ensure you pay attention to the symbol which divides the hours from the minutes, which is either a semicolon (for hours and minutes) or a decimal (for hours and hundreths of an hour). This is particularly important on the Timesheet Management page, where all numbers are provided in decimal format by default. If you wish to view them in HH:MM format, tick the option to "Show time in HH:MM" format at the bottom of this table.
